It was a clash which had everyone on the edge of their seats, but finally it was SRK's Kolkata Knight riders who walked away triumphant in the much awaited Indian Premier League opener, crushing Vijay Mallya's Royal Challengers with a 140 run victory.Dazzling firewords was displayed in Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium yesterday (April 18), on a night when cricket changed for ever. The nation witnessed a mammoth opening ceremony before the match commenced. However, a much more spectacular pyrotechnique awaited the audience present.
Brendon McCullum's blade spewed fire. The Kolkata Knight Rider batsman pulled, drove and hoicked the Royal Challengers' bowlers out of the park at their own home and completed a royal century off just 53 balls. The man of the moment himself was under pressure in front of a jam packed stadium. Facing the nerves of the IPL debut, Brendon said that he could not have asked for a better start and he was highly pleased with his performance.
But, McCullum wasn't done yet and no bowler escaped his fury which continued till the last ball of the innings. He remained unconquered on a record 158 off 73 balls that was studded with 13 sixes and 10 boundaries. This score being the highest individual score in the Twenty20 cricket, guided his team to a winning total of 222.
Dr Mallya's Challengers were hardly Royal as they crumbled under the weight of the daunting target. A procession back to the pavilion seemed their fate as a victory for the home team had turned into a mirage and it wasn't too long before they folded up for a disastrous 82.
Captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders -- Sourav Ganguly was all smiles after this emphatic victory and said, "It is a fantastic win and the next match is going to be played in Kolkata which will be better." On his team mate -- Brendon's stupendous performance, Dada said that it has been one of the best innings he has ever seen in a long time.
Brendon McCullum has raised the bar in the very first match of the inaugural DLF Indian Premier League and if the tournament opener is any indication, the IPL will see many more records being created only to be broken.
